The partnership
About ROOTED
ROOTED – Reconnection and Outreach of Adults: Teaching Environmental Discovery – is an Erasmus+ cooperation partnership in adult education.
How did it start?
The ROOTED project began with a simple observation: while nature plays a vital role in our wellbeing, many adults—especially older people—are becoming increasingly disconnected from it. Limited mobility, urban living, and fewer opportunities for outdoor learning often make this connection harder to maintain with age.
To respond to this, BirdLife Malta joined forces with partner BirdLife organisations from Greece, Poland and Spain, together with European Dialogue (Európsky dialóg), bringing expertise in environmental education, adult learning, and digital engagement. This partnership laid the foundation for ROOTED, creating a shared vision to reconnect adults with nature through accessible activities, storytelling, and innovative digital tools, while strengthening bonds between generations.
The project in brief
From the public project summary submitted to the Erasmus+ programme:
Objectives
ROOTED aspires to create a holistic and impactful experience by combining environmental education, technology integration, and community involvement amongst adults and senior citizens. Ultimately, the project aims to inspire positive changes in attitudes and behaviours toward nature and environmental sustainability whilst enhancing the value and fostering a sense of belonging amongst adults and senior citizens within the community.
Implementation
In summary, the project activities revolve around interactive educational sessions, digital literacy initiatives, the creation of methodological materials, community events, technology integration, information sharing, and the establishment of a blog platform. The holistic approach aims to empower participants, promote environmental inclusivity, and create a lasting impact on attitudes toward nature and community involvement.
Results
ROOTED envisions a transformative impact on participants, communities, and the environment. The expected results include heightened environmental awareness, improved digital literacy, increased inclusivity in environmental activities, active participation in environmental stewardship, enhanced access to nature through technology, practical guidance for nature enjoyment, and the promotion of intergenerational knowledge sharing and community building.
