Accessibility statement

Our aim

ROOTED is about bringing people of all ages closer to nature, and many of our visitors are older adults. We want everyone to be able to use this website, including people with visual, hearing, motor or cognitive difficulties. We aim to meet level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.

What we have done

  • Text is large and calm by default, on a light background with strong contrast, and the pages adapt to phones, tablets and large screens. You can also enlarge the text with your browser’s zoom.
  • Every page has a “Skip to main content” link, a clear structure with headings, and labelled menus and buttons, so that screen readers and keyboard users can find their way.
  • The menus, the language switcher, the search, the “Display & reading” panel and the picture viewer can be used with the keyboard alone. The Esc key closes menus, panels and enlarged pictures.
  • Pictures have a text description (alt text). The language of each article, podcast or document is marked in the page code, so that screen readers can use the right pronunciation.
  • Videos, podcast players and maps from other services start only when you click a button, and each has a link to open it on the service’s own website.

The “Display & reading” panel

At the top of every page, next to Search and the language choice, there is a “Display” button with the ROOTED tree. It opens the “Display & reading” panel below the header, with these options:

  • Text size: five steps, from 100 % to 175 %.
  • More space between lines and letters.
  • Easy-to-read font.
  • High contrast.
  • Underline all links.
  • Stop animations. This is switched on automatically if your device is set to reduce motion.
  • Text magnifier: the text under the pointer or the keyboard focus is shown larger in a floating box.
  • Reading guide: a horizontal bar that follows the pointer.
  • Big mouse pointer.
  • Touchscreen mode (see below).
  • Reset all settings. Touchscreen mode stays as it is, because it is a setting for the screen, not for the reader.

Your choices are saved in your browser only, so that they are still there on your next visit (see the privacy notice). Nothing is sent to us.

Touchscreen mode

For large touchscreens, for example in care homes, the website has a touchscreen mode. Text and buttons become larger (every button is at least about 64 pixels), the menu opens as a full screen of large tiles, and a bar at the bottom of the screen offers Back, Home, Menu and Top. Switch it on with the “Touchscreen mode” button at the top of the page or in the “Display & reading” panel, and switch it off with “Exit touchscreen mode”. Staff who set up a screen can also add ?touch=1 to the address, or ?touch=0 to switch it off.

After five minutes without use, a notice with a 20-second countdown appears. Unless someone touches the screen or chooses “Stay here”, the website then returns to the home page, so that the next person can start from the beginning. If a video, podcast or map story has been opened on the page, the wait is at least 30 minutes. Staff can change the five minutes by adding ?idle= and a number of minutes to the address, or switch this off with ?idle=0.

Known limitations

  • Documents from the partners. The manual, the handbooks and the presentations are PDF or PowerPoint files made by the partners. They may not be fully accessible: some are not tagged for screen readers, and some presentations are made of images without text that a screen reader can read.
  • Content from other services. Podcast players (Spotify), videos (YouTube), map stories (ArcGIS StoryMaps) and maps (Google Maps, Mapy.com) are provided by other companies. We do not control their accessibility, and the maps in particular may be hard to use with a keyboard or a screen reader.
  • Audio and video. Not every podcast episode or video has a written transcript or captions.
  • Languages. The menus and page texts are available in English, Maltese, Greek, Polish, Spanish and Slovak. Articles, podcasts, presentations and other content are shown in the language in which the partners wrote them, and each item shows its language; they are not translated. This statement and the privacy notice are available in all six languages.
  • Links in running text. In touchscreen mode, links inside paragraphs are smaller than the other buttons; they have a slightly larger touch area.
  • No full audit yet. A full accessibility audit by an independent expert has not been carried out. Some parts of the website may not yet meet WCAG 2.1 AA.
