BirdLife Malta’s project launch post for social media, 14 March 2025.

We’re excited to announce the launch of ROOTED – Reconnection and Outreach of Adults: Teaching Environmental Discovery! This Erasmus+ project in the sector of Adult Education is all about bringing people of all generations closer to nature through education, storytelling, and hands-on activities.

Why ROOTED?

ROOTED is a project about not forgetting your origin, Mother Earth, and staying connected with all generations of your family.

Nature is a powerful tool for mental, physical, and social well-being. However, many people, especially seniors, are becoming disconnected from it. ROOTED aims to rebuild this bond by encouraging older generations to share their experiences while learning new skills through modern tools like bird and plant identification apps, podcasts, webpages, and community activities.

Project duration

31.12.2024 – 30.12.2026

Who’s involved?

A strong partnership between BirdLife Malta and environmental and civic organizations across Europe, including:

  • OTOP (Poland)
  • SEO (Spain)
  • HOS (Greece)
  • Europsky Dialog (Slovakia)

Together, we’re creating a meaningful and lasting impact!

What’s coming?

  • A podcast series with seniors sharing their memories and experiences with nature.
  • Engaging workshops and events promoting biodiversity awareness and learning through hands on activities in our beautiful nature reserves.
  • A handbook for adults with useful updated hiking routes and a guide on what they can see along the way.
  • A manual for entities working with seniors on how to use small green spaces effectively for better mental health and education purposes.
  • Digital tools to help people connect with nature – for example, big info screens in nature reserves or web cameras that transmit video directly to an online page so people can access nature from home.

How is it going?

We found out that we won in August 2024 and started to work in November on it. Since then, we’ve had a lot of communication with partners, including several long online meetings to ensure that everything is on the same page.

We’re currently working on the website, setting up the Spotify account for our podcast series, recording podcasts with seniors, developing engaging content for workshops, handbooks, and manuals. And of course, starting to meet seniors and involve them in our activities.

And many other behind the stage work!
